S8F redesign :)

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

I like it so far…. I think I’ll stay with it a while.

I’m in the process of building three standalone apps using MoonPHP 1.0,  “notes”, “pix”, and “sounds”.  They will be for mini-blogging, photo-posting, and mp3 posting respectively. Then I’ll use RSS to feed them to the front page.

New MoonPHP site design

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

I’ve redesigned moonphp.org with a new theme I call “shiny.” What do you think? The site is also running off of the latest trunk from SVN. I also added some unit tests using the SimpleTest testing framework, which will eventually be an extensive test suite and make it easy to develop new features in a sandbox-type environment. I just started using SimpleTest yesterday, and so far I really enjoy working with it, especially the built-in virtual web browser. I also developed a nifty plugin today (running on moonphp.org) that makes a site support no-www.org, by permanently redirecting http://www.yoursite.com/* to http://yoursite.com/*. I like the no-www idea and I try to support it on my personal sites.

About the name…

Once I convinced myself I needed a new website, I of course had to name it. Rummaging through my Gmail for inspiration, I stumbled upon a pretty memorable email:

Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2006 13:54:43 +0240
From: "Ferdinand Brandon" <ferdinandbrandon@mail.ru>
X-Mailer: The Bat! (v3.01 RC8) Professional
Subject: S8F

I stepped inside and went straight for the canisters. I crouched over
one-in-a-million bird. Most of us came along ever so slowly. We went from
He looked up from the map and stared out the window. And I stared out
and he couldn’t help but think that there might be one or two gulls back

Hello, Void!

Monday, January 14th, 2008

Hi there… something more than slightly eventful today, s8f.org has passed into existence!

As always, when I start a new website I have great hopes for the future. I’m excited about this site because:

  • I like the name (lol). So few letters to type makes me happy. It is also easier to say than “finallyInsane.”
  • I actually have some things worked out now that I can share with the world.
  • I’ve been needing a way to track and formalize my thought progression, especially as I deal with the problems of overhauling my PHP framework, Moon PHP.
  • Being so top-secret about my life doesn’t seem so important anymore.
  • I like designing, and it’s inspiring to start fresh.
  • Doing something non-client-related is pretty overdue.
  • Bullets are cool.

This blog is kind of a bridge between what I intend to do later with this site, and now. In other words, I will eventually have lots of cool content to show you :)
